Still wet-n-windy

The weather is much the same as last week. Inside, Nellie's boiler (well the outside casing only to keep weight down) and the steam engine were positioned back inside the hull.

Tool preventative maintenance was undertaken before processing wood pieces to be fitted to the Groat dinghy.

The broken casting for large band saw was welded back together by a volunteer during the week and is now ready for refitting.

Wet-n-windy

Not the best weather this week and its set to continue this way for a few days yet so most work this week is inside out of the weather.

Work continues on the refurbishment of the large bandsaw. We found a broken casting while dismantling the lower guide assembly so this has gone off with a volunteer to see if we can braze the two parts back together.

Nellie paint work is proceeding with various mounting pieces now painted white.

More wood is being prepared for the Groat dinghy.

We need some more metal frames for storing boats bunked one above another so the crew spent some time measuring up.

Busy Again

Having removed various inconvenient internal wall concrete footings before Christmas the floor and associated walls have been finished by screeding over. Now we can easily move heavy equipment throughout the workshop.

Nellie's steam boiler is getting cleaned up and painted.

The winter gales had removed the cover we had over our larch planks so this had to be replaced.

Work continues on one of the smaller dinghies.

The 3 phase electrical contactor on the large band saw we acquired late last year is getting refurbished.

Snow

Orkney spent a week covered in snow and with strong winds snow drifts were a problem so only the hardiest crew turned out.

Evaporating Evaporators

This week we removed a couple of old evaporator units from our machinery area. After disconnecting the units from the electrical and refrigeration systems we dropped the heavy units onto a scaffolding tower then moved the load to our lifting hard point then lifted off and dropped the units onto a pallet.

Scaffolding

Lots of scaffolding in use this week. We completed work on a hard point which will allow us more lift clearance. We have also started work on the removal of a couple of dead evaporator units from our machinery area.

With the new hard point complete we could remove the outside jacket from Nellie's old steam boiler.

Cleaning of the bandsaw table to remove surface rust continued and is now pretty much complete.

Infrastructure work

We undertook some investigative work to prepare for moving some 3 Phase sockets within the workshop. The large bandsaw we recently acquired requires 3 Phase electricity but we won't have any spare 3 Phase sockets available in the area we want to deploy the bandsaw. Consequently we need to reposition some of the 3 Phase sockets that we are not using from elsewhere in the workshop.

Service space between floors
Other work today included installing a hard point for lifting over a raised roof area.

Refurbishment work on the large bandsaw has started. A large amount of sawdust has been removed and rusty areas cleaned up.
