Checking out a new home...

As well as continuing to prep the deck supports ready for the fixing down of the new deck on Saga the team took and hour or so out to check out a new potential storage facility. We were able to take some important measurements and inspect the steel work to work out were we could put in a new boat door.

Meanwhile in a different location another team was continuing to work on the painting of the dinghy Linda and cleaning of the rather larger steam boat Nellie.

Cutting Expensive Plywood Veneer

It was time to start on the new deck for Saga. First we laid a couple of 8x4' cardboard sheets on the boat to work out how to juggle the separate pieces we would need to cut out. Templates were marked up on the cardboard sheets. These cardboard templates were then cut out and tessalated onto a couple of expensive Sapele veneered plywood sheet. The outline of the template was then transferred to the plywood and finally the required shapes were cut out. These are just rough cuts over sized by around 10mm. Final trimming will take place later.

Saga Green

The interior of Saga has been touched up and is now finished. The next job will be the fitting of the new plywood decking. Work will start on the fitting the new deck in a week or two after the work crew have finished a couple of small jobs on other boats also under going restoration.

Linda is looking smarter

The dinghy Linda is getting under underside painted in a smart light blue. Her oars are also getting the same colour.
At another location the painting of the inside of Saga has pretty much been completed. The missing deck support on the stern board has also been replaced and just needs a little fairing off to finish up the deck support work.

Happy New Year

Volunteers started 2022 by continuing with painting the interior of Saga. The work on the replacement deck spars is pretty much complete but we won't start to apply the new decking until painting of the interior has been finished - it's just easier to paint the inside without the deck in place.

The rot in the stern post had already been scrapped out. Since Saga is being restored for display, and not to go sailing, we filled the voids in the stern post, where the rotten wood had been removed, with filler. If Saga was to go sailing again we would have probably have had to replace the entire stern post.

Meanwhile at the front of the boat a team was replacing the spacers between the deck spars.

New Colour

Following a couple of coats of undercoat the green top coat is now being applied. It's easier to paint the inside before the new deck is fixed on.

Meanwhile work continues on the new foredeck spars:
